Veterinary Assistant

You are responsible for taking care of the animals under the supervision of a veterinarian or veterinarian technologist. You take care of feeding, bathing and exercising animals, and restrain them during testing and treatment.

What you will do

Use soft skills personal qualities to actively listen, problem-solve and exercise critical thinking when evaluating decisions and choose one with the most promising outcome. You'll have to remain calm and on task in what is often a busy and even chaotic environment with numerous distractions. You will also have to be able to lift animals and heavy objects.

  • Use your clinical skills to provide the highest level of care
  • Perform initial evaluation of pet’s health, obtain health history from clients and handle patients for examination
  • Complete lab work as required
  • Take radiographs and understand radiology safety
  • Perform intravenous catheter placement and assist in collecting samples for diagnostics
  • Use correct veterinary terminology to complete medical records and handover cases
  • Perform medical calculations
  • Administer injections and other treatments under the supervision of a veterinarian
  • Monitor anesthesia and prepare patients for surgery
  • Perform dental prophylaxis
  • Fill prescriptions for patients and have an understanding of commonly used medications
  • Communicate with and educate clients/pet owners
  • Perform duties as assigned by your team leader, such as stocking of supplies and medication.
  • Cleaning up equipment and space after procedures
  • Collaborate with veterinary team to provide the best care to patients
  • Grow, learn, teach and succeed in a happy work environment
